Neutral aesthetic in a compact footprint

Client Brief:

The client’s brief was to modernise this bathroom with a neutral, masculine aesthetic while improving functionality within a compact footprint. A key part of the brief involved removing a second internal doorway to simplify the layout and create one more cohesive, usable unified space. The goal was to maximise practicality without compromising on warmth or a refined overall feel.

The Design:

The design focused on creating a calm, contemporary bathroom with a restrained palette that feels both timeless and tailored. Soft neutral finishes were carefully selected to bring lightness to the compact space, while avoiding too many darker tones that could make the room feel enclosed. Gold fittings were used throughout to introduce warmth and contrast, adding a refined layer of detail against the more minimal backdrop. A timber barn door became a defining feature of the project, bringing texture, character and a subtle architectural statement while improving functionality within the reworked layout.

The Challenges:

Working within a small footprint required careful planning and problem-solving. The doorway was relocated to the left and reduced in size to allow for a full-depth vanity, significantly improving usability. Material selection was also critical, with finishes chosen to maintain a sense of openness in the compact room. Further complexity arose when the client’s original preference for a wall-hung toilet proved unworkable due to internal wall limitations, first-floor plumbing constraints and lack of access from below. The solution was an in-wall cistern toilet, which maintained a streamlined look while responding to the practical realities of the space.

The Result:

The result is a highly finished renovation that balances function with understated sophistication. Through thoughtful planning, clever spatial reconfiguration and carefully selected finishes, this once constrained bathroom has been transformed into a cohesive, practical and refined space. The timber barn door, timber framed mirror and gold fittings bring personality and warmth, while the neutral palette creates a timeless foundation, delivering a bathroom that feels both elevated and effortless.
