Client Brief:
From dated and disconnected to warm, functional and full of character, this bathroom, ensuite and laundry renovation is a beautiful example of practical design enriched with thoughtful detailing. The client’s brief centred on improving functionality, modernising each space and introducing natural materials to bring warmth and texture throughout. In the main bathroom, the focus was on better usability and a more refined aesthetic, while the ensuite was expanded by borrowing space from the adjoining laundry to improve proportions without compromising functionality. In the laundry, the challenge was to create a harder-working space within a smaller footprint, proving that utility rooms can be as considered as the rest of the home.

The Design:
The concept, designed by Saran Interiors, balances modern simplicity with craftsmanship, using natural timbers, organic-toned tiles, square set ceilings and VJ panelling to create cohesion across all three spaces while capturing the modern farmhouse aesthetic the client was seeking.

In the main bathroom, improved functionality was paired with a more refined material palette, where mosaic feature tiles, a custom hardwood framed mirror and a radius edge shower screen introduce softness, texture and detail. Repurposed railway sleepers were reimagined as floating vanities, supported by custom-made brackets, bring warmth and individuality, while custom hardwood timber window sills further reinforce the natural material story.

In the ensuite, the existing layout was retained but thoughtfully refined, with space borrowed from the adjoining laundry to improve proportions and allow for a more functional shower with a full-width shelf running along the back wall. A personalised custom wallpaper introduces a unique and expressive layer, balanced by feature subway tiles, a fully frameless shower screen, an in-wall cistern and heated towel rail that elevate everyday function. Custom hardwood window sills with a stone shelf detail continue the layered material palette and strengthen continuity between spaces.

In the laundry, functionality was reimagined within a smaller footprint through custom cabinetry, stone benchtops and splashback, and a new external door configuration that improved flow and usability. Though highly practical, the space was designed with the same level of detail as the bathrooms, ensuring it feels integrated rather than secondary.

The Challenges:
As with many renovations, the craftsmanship lies in the complexity behind the finished result. Challenges included cutting into concrete to relocate the floor waste, moving the ensuite back wall to create more space, installing a new external door and jamb in the laundry, and resolving numerous detailed junctions, including aligning VJ panelling, gyprock, wallpaper and mosaic tiles and skirt tiles to sit flush throughout. Particular care was also required in integrating custom elements, from bespoke brackets for the floating railway sleeper shelves to ensuring the custom wallpaper aligned seamlessly with surrounding finishes. We know that these considered moments, while often subtle, are what gives the project its enduring quality.

The Results:
The result is a detail-driven renovation that balances functionality with warmth and individuality, creating spaces that feel harmonious, highly personal and built to last. These rooms went from old and tired to thoughtful and full of character, this transformation is a beautiful example of modern function grounded in timeless, material-rich design.
